The National Household Income and Expenditure Survey (ENIGH) is the most popular source of information to find out to what extent the wealth generated is distributed in the country between the different sectors of the population.
In 2008, the survey reveals 26'732,594 households in the country, with an average of four people per household, of which 1.1 are under 14; 2.6 are between 14 and 64 and 0.3 are 65 years old or more. The number of earners per household is 2.3 members, while in 2002 only had 2 recipients per household.
Of the total income received by households, 80.1% is monetary and 19.9% nonmonetary; from the first, most (62.5%) comes from the remuneration received by household members for work subordinate, followed in importance by income received by independent workers (15.8%), and transfers received by government institutions, private or other households (12.4%), to name the most important sources.
Regarding the distribution of household expenditure, the survey revealed that the main components of current spending money of the members of households are food, beverage and tobacco (33.6 % for the year 2008), transport (18.4 in 2008), education and entertainment (13.5% in 2008), housing and fuel (10.0% in 2008).
For 2008 the behavior of the average quarterly monetary current expenditure per household showed a downward trend since the expenditure of households was $21,984 pesos. The category in which there was major spending by households was the food, beverage and tobacco, in which they spent $7,389 pesos on average each quarter, followed by transportation, and communications with $4,052 pesos and education and recreation with $2,974 pesos quarterly average.
